entry level CPU for host box

I am considering building my own box for PMV.
I am looking at the i3-4170 vs FX-8300.
Would I be better off with the 2 core i3 or the 8 core FX processor?

Hi,
depends what VMs do you have running (how much cores in parallel).
I had a long time pve-server with fx-8350 in production and they work well - but now with E5-1650 v3 because of better cpu-power and more RAM.

But the amd-cpu can run with ECC-Mem! (depends on the mainboard)

Then you'll have a low power consuming setup with a lot of horse power. I have two of these on a SuperMicro board which has never used more than 34W
