Disk image changing size during restore

I have a compressed dynamic qcow2 image that reports as 46GB on the harddrive....when gziped it compresses down to 27GB, but when I restore the drive image it creates a 2TB file...which is the full size of the dynamic image and takes 30+hours to create.

I have tried using the internal backup and restore features, I have tried copying the original image from one drive to the other, I have tried using DD and rsync (I just reaching for straws now).

Is there something I'm missing?

Not sure how to fix the restore issue.

use cp with the --sparse option when you copy original to another disk and your file will not grow.
