containers won't start properly after Debian upgrade

Ì upgraded the host machine to Debian Stretch (Proxmox 5.0). Everything went flawlessly. After that I went in the containers and upgraded them from Jessie to Stretch.
On reboot, (almost) nothing works; containers start with minimal services, some services take minutes to start (ssh, nginx), on some containers they never start. One container gets spammed with unregister_netdevice: waiting for lo to become free. Usage count = 1
On another one I get memory errors when trying to start services.
Sometimes I can't even stop the containers, it just hangs.
