Is there anyway to change the Network card type say from RTL8139 to VirtIO or change the Drive type from IDE to VirtIO after the VM has been installed?

I ask because its pretty difficult to install Server 2003 or XP on Virtio when it doesnt recognize the controller and there is no way to install the drivers. You cant use a CD, USB or anything other than a Floppy drive for driver installs during OS install and it looks like the Floppy option is currently useless with no way to mount an image or files to it.

Every other virtualization platform allows changing of the controller types so I would assume this one would too.

for disk drivers, see this procedure.

for win2008 you can use the drivers form a ISO (for the installation as well).

change network:
power off your VM, and add/remove whatever you need. see http://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Hardware_setup_for_KVM_guests_%28Video%29

pls note, if you change anything on the hardware you need to poweroff and start your VM, a reboot is not enough to apply the changes. only mounting ISO works during a running VM.
