The announcement of PBS is really a good news.
One option which would make it nearly perfect for me, would be an option in the GUI, which allows to manage all scheduled backups of all clients in one single place.

I have no clue, how communication between the client and server process are currently working, but I assume only from client to server.
Maybe the client can be invoked by cron every hour, fetching scheduled backup jobs from the server. If there are backups scheduled for the next hour, simply go to sleep until the start time and run them.

Any thoughts?

No, we do not plan such a thing. It's much easier and flexible to let the client decide this, in Proxmox VE you can just create a cluster wide backup schedule once and be done. If, this would be a feature of a future "datacenter manager".

Got your point, but I still believe, maintaining backups from a central GUI is much easier even if they are not related to VMs or containers. (backup type "host")
