I am running PVE 6.4 that has only one disk. I'd like to back this disk up before upgrading to PVE 7. I've tried clonezilla but it failed I think because it does not support "thin" LVM provisioning. The exact error said something about image file for pve-data was not found. Any suggestions on how I can backup my PVE disk successfully?

You should tell clonezilla not to look for partitions and back them up individually but do a full block level backup of the whole drive instead. So you get a complete 1-to-1 backup of every bit on that drive. That way it shound't complain about the content on that drive because it just stupidly copies every bit one after another.
