Since I want to setup a new Proxmox VE instance here, based on Intel's SandyBridge hardware, I wonder if somehow a Linux kernel 3.x+ is available?

AFAIK that works with our 2.6.32 kernel (based on RHEL 6.3).
Well, works and works is not the same. I do have horrible experiences running SandyBridge CPU below Kernel 3.x, what is not any developers fault, more an Intel thing. Backports are always a workaround with compromises.

On the other side I have to work with RedHat installations in the field on nearly daily base and that experience is unfortunately also somewhat odd. So, I'm unsure to take these backports as advertising or not ...

The CPU and Chipset will pretty sure work. But I want to have it run excellent, with all their advantages, using their computing power, while saving energy. A compromise is not acceptable, it's a server running hours, for hours, for hours ...

Since I have experience values to compare, I will give it a try ...

Thanks for the answers.

Cheers
