I have a Dell Power edge 2950 III with a non-functioning CD-Drive and 1st NIC port (2nd one works, I also have installed a 4 port Gbit Intel NIC), I was using ESXi until my trial ran out...I remembered watching a TekSyndicate video on Proxmox and refinding it, found it easy to install. So I installed it, and could not load the web GUI nor ping it from a macbook and from the server to a macbook. and with many... different ideas and many reinstalls, to no effect. I Tried:
  • Setting up an IP on the eth0 device rather than the vmbr0 interface.
  • Using DHCP to set eth0
  • Unplugging the server (from the network) during install
  • Swapping ethernet cables (even though both ends had their link light on for that port)
  • Removing the Intel NIC
  • Banging my head on the wall in frustration (*jk)
  • ...
Please help

Have you tried connecting your Intel card during installiert?
Why would proxmox help you with that you don't seem to have a subscription...

If your saying the first nic does not work, then your need to make sure you configure vmbr0 interface to use the second NIC normal eth1.

If you run "ip a" in the terminal it will show a list of adapaters and should give you an idea of which one you need to use.

Yes, but I thought proxmox might be having some issues with the drivers so I removed it for one install... (FYI I tried installing proxmox about 10+ times all with the same thing)

*Answer to your second point: I was was not expecting Proxmox themselves to help but the community...

The first NIC on the server (not the Intel NIC) does not show up anymore in previous linux installs or proxmox.

I think I figured it out, so opps port 1 showed up (I never plug anything into it anyway) and vmbr0 is linked to the first port...I know what I need to do...

I went and changed in /etc/network/interfaces benign linked to eth0 to eth1, now rebooting...

I thought that the first port would not show up in OSes on the system...i.e in my previous Ubuntu Server install on that system...guess not..

Hi, I have used many DELL 2950s and DELL maintains an excellent repo of BIOS and firmware updates.
Do update all the possible BIOS/firmware for your machines.
