hello, I have a secondary hard drive which proxmox detect during install, I just wanted to add that hard disk to my local storage directory so I can install VM in there, I just run fdisk -l and it display the following.

Disk /dev/sdc: 146.8 GB, 146815733760 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 17849 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x49e2fd2f

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdc1 1 17849 143372061 83 Linux

I would like to know how I can format that and add to my storage so I can install VM in to that hard drive as that drive has 15K RPM.

Please help.

Thanks.

use this guide if you have just one server (not a cluster) and want to store HDD images for KVM guests:
http://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Storage_Model#LVM_Groups_with_Local_Backing
it's pretty simple, just 2 console commands and a few clicks in the web interface
Something like:
pvcreate /dev/sdc1
vgcreate localstor /dev/sdc1
ghen in the web ui go to storage - click 'add LVM Group', put in a name, select localstor from the list and press 'save'.

The problem is when I click on LVM Group I get an error message

Code:
 [B]Internal Server Error[/B]

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request. Please contact the server administrator, root and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

 Apache Embperl 2.2.0 [Tue May 17 08:45:11 2011]

I run that command and I get an error

pvcreate /dev/sdc
Device /dev/sdc not found (or ignored by filtering).

strange. that's some bug, the command runs fine on my PVE hosts:
proxmox2:~# /sbin/vgs --separator : --noheadings --units k --unbuffered --nosuffix --options vg_name,vg_size,vg_free
lvmstor:488382464.00:454828032.00
pve:155762688.00:4190208.00

I run this command first

mkfs.ext3 /dev/sdc & then pvcreate /dev/sdc

Physical volume "/dev/sdc" successfully created

But when I visited my GUI for LVM Group I got a error Internal Server error message its a fresh install of PROXMOX, I dont know why this problem can any one from proxmox help me here.

if you use a block device like /dev/sdc you do NOT need to format it. second, if you want to use a device like /dev/sdc you should create a partition first (e.g. with fdisk /dev/sdc) and then use this partition as physical volume (e.g. /dev/sdc1)

Hello

I have created a partition now its showing as

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdc1 1 17849 143372061 83 Linux

BUt again when I CLICK ON LVM Group I get INTERNAL SERVER ERROR.

Hi,
perhaps something wrong with the vg-naming?
BTW. a lvm-partition should have the type 8e and not 83 - that's you later know what kind of partition this is.

Please post the full output of following commands:
Code:
fdisk -l
pvdisplay
vgdisplay
lvdisplay
cat /etc/pve/storage.cfg

Hi,
you output shows
a) your system-disk, normaly sda is sde.
b) you have tried to build a vg named "VG_XenStorage"? Or is this old content on the disk?

I assume the disks sdc and sdd are empty or could be erased?
b) looks for not realy wiped lvm-infos. Perhaps it's enough to do an "pvremove -f /dev/sdc; pvremove -f /dev/sdd". But if lvm know an deleted partition this don't help.
You can wipe ( all content lost!!) the disk with "dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdc bs=1024k count=1" - the same with sdd.

But be sure to use the right disks!!

After that you should reboot, so that lvm don't know about lost partitions...
Than create an partition type 8e on the disk and do an "pvcreate /dev/sdc1" and after that vgcreate (with an simple name for start). Then you should be able to use this vg in the storage-gui.

BTW. it's an good idea to change the bios/raid-settings to get the boot-disk as first disk (sda), because normaly grub-install on the mbr on the first disk - and normaly you aspect, that the system-disk also contain the right boot-loader...

Thanks for all your help, I have finally created that, but when I add LVM storage it is showing disk is full by 97% ? is that normal, also so those two drives which I formatted are now ONE big disk is that correct.

Why LVM is showing 97% full is that normal please respond. Thanks once again for all your help and support.

Hi,
i guess because you used the lvm-space for an logical volume?
Look with "vgdisplay" and "lvdisplay" (and post the content).

Normaly you create onla an volume group and add them to the storage-list of pve.
Pve create than the vm-disks as logical volume on the volume-group.

Hi,
there isn't another volumegroup (only pve). So i assume you ignore my post about "pvcreate and vgcreate"...
In this case it's not very easy to help you... perhaps you should read the manual about lvm (man lvm).

Udo

sorry, it was from my production server let me post it from my demo server which I AM USING to create lvm .

hello - I think its working, I forget to run vgcreate here is the screen shot, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL YOUR HELP. I appreciate it so much.Screen shot 2011-05-18 at 5.09.18 PM.png
