Some follow up information on what I've observed when this happened again; The processes that are running inside the container get put into the D state by lxc-freeze. However, lxc-freeze itself does not enter the D state when this issue occurs.
Example:
root@freya:~# ps axl | awk '$10 ~ /D/'
1...
The checking once a second looks to be consistent with the strace output I saw. However proxmox definitely does not kill it in this case within any reasonable timeout. I've let the backup process run for several hours on a few occasions, without making any progress past the container freezing.
You may be on to something there. I ran the backup jobs with -mode stop once and the suspend and snapshot options seem to work again after that. (So far at least.)
I'll keep an eye on it and see if next time it fails and processes are in the D-state
It looks like I'm having the same issue with a similar setup. Except my backups are written to an external drive rather than an NFS.
