    Disk Cache wiki documentation

Yes, if drives lie about the sync writes that are still in cache, that is dangerous. But even with writeback you can't prevent that. To my knowledge, that is a hardware problem, not a software problem. Yes, and what software could have prevented that? I would argue not even ZFS. That is why...

    Disk Cache wiki documentation

Thanks for the clarification. I have learned some stuff since then, so I hope you don't mind my follow up questions. Sure, but only for async writes. So there is no difference between bare metal or a VM with no cache. At least that is how I understand it. But that is only none important data...

Understand and prevent (single drive) ZFS data loss

How about this forum: https://forum.storj.io ? Or ZFS or Ubuntu? This was your first deadly sin. First of all, you can't use both on the same drive. Second, a SLOG device only speeds up sync writes. Third, there is no "cache" in ZFS. You mean L2ARC? Generally speaking, most of the time L2ARC...

    SSH Verbindung Proxmox

    zfs nesting reduce write amplification

I would rather switch to none ZFS guests.

    zfs nesting reduce write amplification

Why would you even use nested ZFS? Isn't that just asking for trouble?

    Random freezes, maybe ZFS related

Probably not your problem, since the error seems to be ARC related, but did you try the new BIOS that follows the Intel Baseline Profile? That could explain freezes under high load.

    Random freezes, maybe ZFS related

Would that report errors in the proxmox shell? I am seriously asking, have no idea. I only know that memtest does report errors.

    Random freezes, maybe ZFS related

Sorry I can't really further help you. Only idea I have left is to live boot memtest86 to see if there is something wrong with your RAM.

    Random freezes, maybe ZFS related

I am nowhere near qualified enough to understand these logs, but since you got no answer, I will give it a try. Is your system running out of RAM? Maybe this happens and you have no SWAP. How much of the 64GB are assigned to VMs? I for one also have 64GB, my VMs could use 32GB and ARC it set...

Proxmox install - ZFS on NVME, RAID1 does it make sense ?

I am not an expert on this topic, but I think you guys are mixing a lot of stuff together. PLP is so that in case of a system halt, the drive can safely flush data in-flight (or data that resides in the drive’s DRAM or SRAM cache buffers) to the persistent or non-volatile Flash memory and...

The problem with RAIDZ or why you probably won't get the storage efficiency you think you will get

Well, the same could be said for mirror. There is 3 way mirror and RAIDZ2-3 if you want to survive multiple drive failures. But I agree on that RAIDZ is not good for virtualisation for many reasons and the only advantage of RAIDZ (Storage efficiency) is sometimes even not true.

The problem with RAIDZ or why you probably won't get the storage efficiency you think you will get

Thank you guys for your feedback! Glad that you seem to like it. I personally think that most mirror proponents focus to much on performance. That leads beginners to believe, that because they don’t need the performance, they will get away with the increased efficiency. They would say stuff...

Proxmox install - ZFS on NVME, RAID1 does it make sense ?

Another simple way or option would be like TrueNAS does it. Their TrueNAS Mini systems come with a 16GB SSD. TrueNAS itself is installed on that small SSD. The SSD is not really used for anything else, thous should hopefully not fail. And even if fails, it is not a huge problem, because you...

Proxmox install - ZFS on NVME, RAID1 does it make sense ?

Sure, but one naturally assumes similar behavior than traditional HW Raid. But since this also seems to be true: I think the "problem" is mitigated and I was worried for nothing :)

Proxmox install - ZFS on NVME, RAID1 does it make sense ?

Thank you for your response! That sounds like a good solution. Still, it can cause problems in edge cases and thus should probably be mentioned. If the VPN itself runs on Proxmox or if the Proxmox host offers no IPMI, it could get a little bit tricky to try to remote advise none IT people how...

Proxmox install - ZFS on NVME, RAID1 does it make sense ?

Wow, this thread really caught me off guard. So with a default install, mirror will not always prevent us from total failure if a disk dies? I am fine with using the commands provided in the docs to replace a failed drive. But this only works with a system up and running? What if the power...

    ZFS "problem"

Ahh so that is different :) I would rather use two systems that don't compete for RAM and because even 11 years later still think this post is very good: https://www.truenas.com/community/threads/please-do-not-run-freenas-in-production-as-a-virtual-machine.12484/

    ZFS "problem"

Well that sounds even worse to be honest. As I understood it: You mostly need a NAS to store your ISOs. Maybe some VMs on top for some lightweight services. TrueNAS Scale or unraid are way better suited for this in my opinion. Biggest difference between the two is the "real RAID" vs "fake...
