I have seen some older posts (version 5.2) with this error. The solution was to update. I am running the current 5.3 version and got this error on a backup last night. This file does exist, and the VM is running so not sure why we got this error.

Running the vzdump manually (just this vm isolated) works fine.

I'm also seeing the same type of error and it's happen on multiple of my VMs, but only one at a time.

102 ucs FAILED 00:00:07 no such volume 'local-lvm:vm-102-disk-1'

So far I've just run the backup manually after the scheduled backup fails for one of the VMs and it's worked fine. I've started ignoring it now and so far (knock on wood...) I've never had the same VM disk fail to back up two days in a row.

On the 11th I had my FreeBSD VM fail with this error. Then the nightly backups were fine until yesterday the 21st when one of my Debian VMs failed to backup with the error. Then today my FreeBSD VM failed to backup again.

It's a weird problem. If I can help by providing some info just let me know. I'm really not sure what to look at at this point.

I'm running a Ryzen 2600 based system with 32GB ECC RAM and 4 VMs. This problem did not happen for a while after I set up my system. My best guess is it was triggered by some update or other, but I don't have any idea which one as the problem is somewhat random.

Going back in my vzdump emails I see the first backup error I could find was this.

102 ucs FAILED 00:26:01 vma_queue_write: write error - Broken pipe
103 VM 103 FAILED 00:00:00 unable to create temporary directory '/mnt/backups/dump/vzdump-qemu-103-2018_11_29-03_28_14.tmp' at /usr/share/perl5/PVE/VZDump.pm line 825.

I think this problem might have beeen totally unrelated though as we were having UPS problems and the batteries dying caused us issues when the ups would run it's self test the server would die. I think this error happened around that time.

Not sure if this is related, but the same VM had an issue w/ the backup last night after doing an update via dist-upgrade:

Code:

110: 2019-02-27 18:27:17 ERROR: Backup of VM 110 failed - got timeout

VMs before and after this one (in order they are backup up) worked fine, all go to same local drive.

110: 2019-02-27 18:27:08 INFO: creating archive '/drive2/vzdumpbackups/dump/vzdump-qemu-110-2019_02_27-18_27_06.vma.lzo' 110: 2019-02-27 18:27:14 ERROR: got timeout

I'd guess it's not related and probably has something to do with the storage on /drive2/. If it's NFS, then it's most likely a network/storage problem (hence timeout and not other kind of error).

I still have this issue from time to time. So far I have no idea what triggers it. It doesn't always happen on the same VM either. I have 4 VMs on my server and as far as I can tell, it never happens on the first vm or the last vm in the backups. It's always either the second or the third. One of those VMs is relatively small BSD at about 4GB and the other one is a bigger Debian install at about 25GB.

It also never fails on both VMs at once. It's only one or the other.

I just had it happen as well on one VM out of five. It was the second one out of five, the first backup of a Windows 10 qemu was fine, the second backup of a Debian qemu failed, then the last three lxc's all succeeded. The error logged was "no such volume 'local-lvm:vm-102-disk-0", which does in fact exist. Re-running the backup manually from the GUI worked fine.

102: 2019-03-26 00:06:31 INFO: Starting Backup of VM 102 (qemu)

102: 2019-03-26 00:06:40 ERROR: Backup of VM 102 failed - no such volume 'local-lvm:vm-102-disk-0'

The volume is 100G but only 32 are partitioned right now and the backup size is around 6 GB after compression.

The lvm storage is on a Linux RAID1 with 2x1TB SSD's so Proxmox was installed on top of Debian. The server has a Supermicro Xeon D-1541 motherboard with 32 GB of RAM.

The past 3 nights the same VM out of the 4 I have on my server has given me this error. I backed it up manually this morning with no problems.

Not sure what to do to troubleshoot this, but it doesn't seem to be getting better, and there doesn't appear to be any issues with the VM. Also I've never had a manual backup fail, so it must be something to do with the automated process somehow.

Well, the past week everything had been working well with no backup failures, and then this morning I get the email from the backup tool and 3 out of 4 of my VMs failed with the no such volume error. This is the first time in a long time that more than one backup failed, and I'm pretty sure I've never had more than two fail before.

So anyone have any ideas how to go about troubleshooting this?

Hello,

I had similar issues after upgrading to version 5.4-3 lately, three out of five backups failed, but in my case also manual backups of single VM's didn't work anymore.

I got the backup running again by deleting all old backups of the VM's for that the backup did not work anymore (in my case VM ID 111, 112 and 113) including log files from the backup storage.

Easiest way is to SSH into your PVE host, switch to directory "/mnt/pve/backup/dump" and then delete everything by VM-ID with "rm *-[VMID]-*".

Maybe this will solve your issues too.

Greetings

It comes and goes for me. Sometimes it will be weeks before I get a failure, and sometimes I get failures several nights in a row.

The same problem. DELL R320 PERC H710 Mini.
Source disk is HW RAID6 - persistent.

Backup VM manually from GUI without any problems, via Backup scheduled task "no such volume 'local-lvm: vm-1061-disk-0", etc.
