[SOLVED] Strange ZFS space utilization after PBS restore of a VM

Hi, I must be going crazy, so after setting up new system and restoring all my VMs on it from PBS I noticed the following utilization disparity: New system: zfs list NAME USED AVAIL REFER MOUNTPOINT rpool 615G 307G...

[SOLVED] Can't set an symlink in /etc/pve for ZFS encryption

superb explanation, thank you for taking the time to explain the technical decisions and their rational around the PBS/PVE architecture. Thanks!

[SOLVED] Can't set an symlink in /etc/pve for ZFS encryption

Yeah after some thought about it I figured that the pve-cluster would be very confused with another fs bind mounted onto /etc/pve. I ended up using dm-crypt for my backup destination since encrypting /var/lib/pve-cluster would mean I will lose the ability to have encrypted and unencrypted VMs...

[SOLVED] Can't set an symlink in /etc/pve for ZFS encryption

I know this thread is old, but for anyone on the Internet who was looking for this like me - you can do it with bind mount instead of a symlink. I have around 14TB of backups so recreating the PBS volume wasn't suitable, if you have an empty PBS volume definitely encrypt it before doing any...

[SOLVED] Is it safe to backup a PVE with encrypted zfs pool (native) to PBS

Superb, thanks! Do you know how VM snapshots behave if I don't transfer them - my basic snapshot usage is do a snapshot, upgrade the VM, delete or restore the snapshot if the upgrade fails. Will that functionality still work? Thanks!

[SOLVED] Is it safe to backup a PVE with encrypted zfs pool (native) to PBS

Hi, I am slowly migrating some of our systems from dm-crypt to native ZFS encryption. Most hosts are pve-manager/7.3-4/d69b70d4 and PBS hosts are v2.3.2-1. I usually have one actual pool with tank/data and tank/data-encrypted which are our unencrypted and encrypted PVE pools: root@atlas:~#...

Is it possible to use a PVE cluster without ZFS replication - UI only?

Hi, I have 3 PVE hosts scattered around Europe so any sort of large data replication won't be possible due to bandwidth constraints. However I do want to manage my 3 hosts from a single UI - without any VM migration and so on. Is it possible to onboard the 3 hosts together in a single UI but...

[SOLVED] Is ZFS scrub required/needed in a VM if the host already does scrubbing?

Excellent, I will look into scheduling scrubs on our important VMs. Thanks for the explanation.

[SOLVED] Is ZFS scrub required/needed in a VM if the host already does scrubbing?

Yes, mostly for snapshots and as a nice volume manager in a VM. Scrubbing costs resources, mainly CPU, that is why I am wondering how the ZFS scrubbing works for zvols which are the VMs disks? So my thought is that if the host scrub repairs the zvol itself (and also does regular read hence...

[SOLVED] Is ZFS scrub required/needed in a VM if the host already does scrubbing?

Hi all, This one has been on the back of my mind for a while. So we have our hosts with ZFS RAID10 arrays which do their scheduled ZFS scrub every month. On top of those arrays we have FreeBSD VMs using ZFS again, however the scrubbing schedule there is disabled. Is there any benefit from...

[SOLVED] [NAT] VM can't connect to forwarded port with network device firewall=1

I reached this thread by searching for the same info, here is how I solved that. Note, I am using a script rather than pushing everything in post-up: auto vmbr0 iface vmbr0 inet static address 10.169.1.1/24 bridge-ports none bridge-stp off bridge-fd 0 post-up...
