Customer has been running older version (5.x) and looking to renew. They are asking if they upgrade to the latest (8.1) but are concerned about importing the existing setup.

Is there any problem migrating upward two version release levels ahead of renewal?

Thanks and regards,

Stefan

Problem could be old LXCs that won't run any longer on new PVE.
And maybe you need to edit network configs of your VMs.

In case you want to upgrade, you will have to upgrade 5 to 6, 6 to 7, 7 to 8.

As @Dunuin already mentioned, in-place upgrades need to go through each major version. The upgrade guides are there.

Though, it might be quicker to first back up the guests and do a clean install and then restore the guests.

I am not sure if the customer is running PMG virtualized. It may be on a bare metal install. In such a case would the LXC support be an issue?
Also, same goes for "Guests", or am I misunderstanding that term?
Sorry, didn't see this is about PMG. Without PVE those VM/LXC considerations shouldn't matter.
