Hi guys,

i've been working on a project to redevelop my companies web server farm, i've used Hyper-V and hated it, used VMware and thought this is expensive and now settled on Proxmox as the best i have come across, i've now been asked to justify my 'feelings' as to why I like Proxmox so much...

I being asked to compare Proxmox VE against Hyper-V, Xen and VMware.

I'm also being asked to find what companies are running Proxmox to see, who else use it.

Any suggestions or comments?

I'm assuming this is for some kind of group of execs? If so, make a simple matrix outlining costs and pros and cons for each.

As for who is using it, it gets a bit harder. However, the Proxmox guys may be able to give you some names.

I've built the matrix, with costs etc... including support costs and comparisons for licencing, I've now been asked to install Xen as a comparison... BUT the whole reason I chose Proxmox was for the easy install and config that comes with it... there is a concern that the QEMU/KVM/OpenVZ containers *might* not be stable :-\ - ive not seen any evidence of this nor had any experience of this but found plenty of evidence to say that KVM and OpenVZ work fine...

Also they've not been able to find enough people to say that they are using Proxmox... i've been successfully running a number of servers for the past 6 months without any issues, but as they are internal servers and not under a significant load the tests don't count...

Apart from OVH and kapper.net that are listed as partners on the Proxmox site and a few companies on the testimonials page, i cant find anyone who is openly saying that they are running Proxmox as their Hypervisor, it would be a great advertisement for Proxmox if there was a page listing any larger corporations running Proxmox - even a small amount of servers.

OVH and Kapper.net are the certified hosting partners. they support the project with hosting services - so if you need hosting, go for there.

If you need Proxmox VE services, check this list of support partners:

One thing you could try is to do a "poll" on Twitter and reach out to people that way. I'm sure there must be people out there who would volunteer such their use of Proxmox or KVM. I do know of some sizable installations in well-known organizations, but I'm not at liberty to talk about it. The people who are running those installations, however, could tell you about it.

As far as KVM goes, which is somewhat separate from Proxmox, there are many, many companies using KVM as their hypervisor. Perhaps not with Proxmox as the management front-end, but still KVM. Just Google some big names you can think of and "KVM" and I'm sure you will find quite a few references to companies using KVM.

Same thing with OpenVZ - used by lots and lots of VPS hosting providers. It's developed by parallels and is the FOSS version of Virtuozzo Containers.

For me personally the ability to combine OpenVZ and KVM is the main factor on choosing ProxmoxVE. Other solutions are either container or full virtualisation, not both at once.
