OpenSolaris on KVM

Hello!

Has anyone ever tried to run opensolaris on Proxmox? I try to use the latest Opensolaris 2009.06 - without success. According to http://www.linux-kvm.org/page/Guest_Support_Status#UNIX_Family:_Solaris.2FOpenSolaris it should run.
When I start the machine from CD and with a blank harddisk the GRUB menu of the CD shows up. But whatever option I choose from GRUB, it always results in a black screen and 100% CPU usage.
I also tried to convert a virtualbox appliance, but the result is the same. The system starts up and shows a blank screen after GRUB.

Can someone help?

Best Regards,
Georg

I just installed it here, seems to work my host:

Code:
pveversion -v

pve-manager: 1.5-7 (pve-manager/1.5/4660)
running kernel: 2.6.24-10-pve
proxmox-ve-2.6.24: 1.5-21
pve-kernel-2.6.24-10-pve: 2.6.24-21
qemu-server: 1.1-11
pve-firmware: 1.0-3
libpve-storage-perl: 1.0-10
vncterm: 0.9-2
vzctl: 3.0.23-1pve8
vzdump: 1.2-5
vzprocps: 2.0.11-1dso2
vzquota: 3.0.11-1
pve-qemu-kvm: 0.11.1-2
and for the KVM guest:
Code:
cat /etc/qemu-server/107.conf

name: opensolaris
ide2: none,media=cdrom
bootdisk: ide0
ostype: l26
ide0: local:107/vm-107-disk-1.raw
memory: 512
sockets: 1
vlan0: rtl8139=0E:F9:BF:4A:BF:F2

I heard that Oracle has not published a clear strategy yet for the future of this OS. So just thinks twice before use it. zfs has some nice features, but the rest is not really what I want from a reliable and future proof system. I just updated my test installations and there is still Firefox 3.1 beta on it. seems no-one maintains the packages, maybe I missed something (I have no subscription) but I would not use it for my projects.

Hi Tom,

thanks for your hint about the future of OpenSolaris, I didn't know that. But anyway we have no plans about an extensive use of this OS. We need to build a test environment for a customer who uses Solaris on its production environment.

Below the configuration of our proxmox host and the opensolaris virtual machine:
Code:
# pveversion -v
pve-manager: 1.5-7 (pve-manager/1.5/4660)
running kernel: 2.6.18-1-pve
proxmox-ve-2.6.18: 1.5-4
pve-kernel-2.6.32-1-pve: 2.6.32-4
pve-kernel-2.6.24-7-pve: 2.6.24-11
pve-kernel-2.6.24-10-pve: 2.6.24-21
pve-kernel-2.6.24-1-pve: 2.6.24-4
pve-kernel-2.6.24-5-pve: 2.6.24-6
pve-kernel-2.6.24-2-pve: 2.6.24-5
pve-kernel-2.6.18-1-pve: 2.6.18-4

vzprocps: 2.0.11-1dso2
vzquota: 3.0.11-1

Code:
# cat /etc/qemu-server/121.conf

Can you see something odd?

Thanks for your help :)

Hi Georg,
which kernel do you use? Some times ago i installed a opensolaris on a pve1.4 (2.6.24) without trouble. After your post i tried yesterday on a 2.6.32-kernel and fail too.

Udo

Hi Udo,

I use 2.6.18. Haven't tried one of the others yet. Maybe I'll do that later if it's possible.

Georg

I already reported that I got it running on 2.6.24 (see the pveversion -v results), and I forgot to mention that it doesn´t work on 2.6.18 here.

Dredging up this old thread: I have been trying to get Nexentastor (a NAS/SAN based on opensolaris 10) working under proxmox. No joy. The kernel starts to boot, then resets into the BIOS. It will install under vmware esxi, but I want to pass through 2 physical sata drives to the appliance, and that seems to be a nightmare in esxi (among other issues.) This is with 2.6.32 (fresh proxmox install.) I will give 2.6.24 a try.

Hi,
the 2.6.24 is unmaintained... I'm waiting on freenas 0.8 (which released the RC1 three days ago!). After oracles doing with opensolaris nexenta is not my favorite.

Udo

Yeah, I get that. My big plus for nexenta: it is the only free ZFS NAS that supports thin provisioning. Big plus for this reason: I can create an iSCSI target *and* CIFS/NFS shares and have them compete for space, rather than trying to guess how much of my 600GB mirror I need for each. As far as I can tell, FreeNAS ZFS does't allow that :( It's possible too that OpenIndiana (open source fork of Open Solaris), might be able to do this too, but whatever lossage is killing me seems specific to the solaris kernel, since OpenIndiana fails the same way :(
