Linux containers (LXC)?

Hi guys,

I was reading the discussion about Proxmox VE kernel with/without support for OpenVZ. As I understand, a large number of people really needs lightweight virtualization (which is fine). My main concern is that OpenVZ will never be included in standard kernel, so Proxmox will always lag behind (old kernels, back-porting of drivers etc.) Is there any hope to replace OpenVZ with LXC which is in upstream kernel:

I think even OpenVZ guys are contributing "LXC" patches to the upstream kernel.

Of course, everything in reasonable time frame (a year or two would be just fine). I'm not even sure LXC currently supports full OpenVZ functionality, but as we have seen with KVM, things can change pretty fast, benefits of living in upstream kernel sources.

AFAIK, only some bits of LXC are in the upstream kernel.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

We already have an lxc prototype here. But it will take one or two years to get really usable.

I will share this two articles on the LXC project. I think that will be the natural successor of OpenVZ (no kernel patch!!! starting from the 2.6.28 kernel)

I think that is one of the best solution for the proxmox enviroment to substitute the OpenVZ support and mantain a large piece of proxomox installation, in most cases full-virtualization isn't the real solution.

From what I can tell it seems that most users of vserver and openvz will move to LXC in the future.

Does the current "extended roadmap" for container virtualization contain LXC yet? Is there such a roadmap?
