Is running proxmox from a usb drive possible? I have a couple of servers that have internal USB ports that I'd like to use rather than waste a SSD on it.

You can do that, no problem. Be wary of those things though, usb flash drives (and CF cards for that matter) tend to have abysmal lifespans (1 day to 1 year, depending on your luck)

I have not tried proxmox but my workstation run ubuntu on usb drive (no other hdd in computer). If you have problem installing try to change emulation of usb in your bios.

I don't reccomend usb install unless you are running your SWAP partiton and logs directory off more reliable storage. The constant writes to these directores can kill your USB very quickly (Within a couple of days.)

Thanks.

How does VMWare handle this?

Unsure sorry, Proxmox is my platform of choice. SWAP partitions and rolling log files are across the board for debian linux though, so i'd not be surprised if a linux based VMware instance had the same issue.
