Hi all,

Latest version (1.4.3) of icedtea-plugin (OpenJDK browser plugin) now works flawlessly with pve-console so no need for Oracle Java anymore:cool:

YES!!! Tested in my workstation with Debian sid GNU/Linux 64bit, wow, at least I can manage proxmox vms now (always rejected the option of poisoning my PC with proprietary software).
Funny that proxmox is going to support Spice very soon for the same task AFAIU, don't know if VNC will be dropped or you will have a choice

works also here. we updated this wiki page, http://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Java_Console_(Ubuntu)

spice will be an additional option, so you can use what you prefer (per VM).

Hi,

I am confused the latest version atm is 1.4.2: http://icedtea.classpath.org/wiki/IcedTea-Web
Also atm I cant scroll with the mouse wheel with it and neither with tigervnc (1.3). The button itself works in the vms though.
As operating systems from the vms I tested Windows 7, ubuntu 12.04 (also with tigervnc) and Debian 6.

I'll give 24 beers to someone who posts how to use Spice in Debian Wheezy. I'll put to http://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/SPICE#Debian_.287.1_and_higher.29

the more people who run Debian on their laptops the better! users can invest time learning about installing debs , running KDE and using GNU/linux CLI instead of fixing something in another operating system.

The reason that I'm posting this is that with this icedtea-plugin version:
Code:
# aptitude show icedtea-plugin
Package: icedtea-plugin
State: installed
Automatically installed: no
Version: 1.4-3~deb7u2

I'm getting this error:
Code:
net.sourceforge.jnlp.LaunchException: Fatal: Initialization Error: Could not initialize applet. For more information click "more information button".
    at net.sourceforge.jnlp.Launcher.createApplet(Launcher.java:734)
    at net.sourceforge.jnlp.Launcher.getApplet(Launcher.java:662)
    at net.sourceforge.jnlp.Launcher$TgThread.run(Launcher.java:914)
when trying to open a console using iceweasel and google chrome.

Is there spice client pkg for rpm and deb install-able from somewhere ?

PS:
or should I report this as a bug?

maybe I've got something set up wrong, but I've had to use windows to get at pve openvz and kvm consoles..

I can't say nothing more than tell you what I've installed and that it works.
I've debian SID 64, and my icedtea-plugin version is 1.4.2, so I'm wondering where you got the 1.4.3 for wheezy.
Here some listing:
Code:
dpkg -l | grep icedt
ii icedtea-7-jre-jamvm:amd64 7u51-2.4.5-2 amd64 Alternative JVM for OpenJDK, using JamVM
ii icedtea-7-plugin:amd64 1.4.2-1 amd64 web browser plugin based on OpenJDK and IcedTea to execute Java applets
ii icedtea-netx:amd64 1.4.2-1 amd64 NetX - implementation of the Java Network Launching Protocol (JNLP)
ii icedtea-netx-common 1.4.2-1 all NetX - implementation of the Java Network Launching Protocol (JNLP)

and
Code:
dpkg -l | grep jre
ii default-jre 2:1.7-51 amd64 Standard Java or Java compatible Runtime
ii default-jre-headless 2:1.7-51 amd64 Standard Java or Java compatible Runtime (headless)
ii icedtea-7-jre-jamvm:amd64 7u51-2.4.5-2 amd64 Alternative JVM for OpenJDK, using JamVM
ii openjdk-7-jre:amd64 7u51-2.4.5-2 amd64 OpenJDK Java runtime, using Hotspot JIT
ii openjdk-7-jre-headless:amd64 7u51-2.4.5-2 amd64 OpenJDK Java runtime, using Hotspot JIT (headless)
ii openjdk-7-jre-lib 7u51-2.4.5-2 all OpenJDK Java runtime (architecture independent libraries)

This java-dependency is a mess for me too, since I avoid using proprietary software on my Free desktops and with Kubuntu 12.04 for instance I don't have an updated and working icedtea, nor AFAIR updated spice libs that work :(
Having a "novnc" option would be great!
Regards

to get the java VNC console in Debian Wheezy, install the following:

> apt-get install icedtea-7-plugin

a working spice client is available in all Ubuntu releases since 13.10. also in Debian Jessie (see https://packages.debian.org/jessie/virt-viewer)

if your favorite distribution does not offer virt-viewer in a recent version (0.5.6 or higher), contact the responsible maintainer (or compile it manually).

atm
stable has icedtea-plugin (1.4-3~deb7u2)
https://packages.debian.org/stable/icedtea-plugin

while testing has icedtea-plugin (1.3.2-1)
https://packages.debian.org/testing/icedtea-plugin

and sid has icedtea-plugin (1.4.2-1 and others)
https://packages.debian.org/unstable/icedtea-plugin

btw, testing and sid have virt-viewer (0.5.6-2)
https://packages.debian.org/testing/virt-viewer
