When OS fault you may reinstall Proxmox (last choice, because you may also fix the issue rather than reinstall). And when you recover a VPS Guest then Proxmox automatically restore its config.
Some configs not part of Proxmox, like sshd_config and resolve.conf. So the better way is copy /etc to your backup, not only Proxmox config.
