Thank you to everyone for your feedback. More changes have been actioned (added ECC para).

I have actioned the changes as per discussions. Please take a look and let me know if you think they convey the message.

Agreed, however, IMHO real life is a bit different to lab tests. Very useful info though. I still believe the data corruption protection of ZFS and the fact you have a FS + LVM outweighs any "reasonable" wear reservations. For me, within reason, ease of use (e.g. how you expand and work with...
I agree with all your points. I will add a bit more meat to the bone to clarify things without making it overly complex. That person was most likely running things on a potato, most likely CPU/RAM constrained as opposed to storage I/O issues, or running in IDE instead of AHCI. I have tested ZFS...
FYI: https://portal.habitats.tech/Proxmox+VE+(PVE)/1.+PVE+7.x+-+Introduction
Use ZFS over any other file/storage system (e.g. EXT, RAID ) on PVEn with adequate CPU & RAM resources. ZFS can be used on featherweight PVE nodes, but the file system will be slower than if using EXT; e.g. on a PVEn...
I will incorporate your suggestions onto the forthcoming subject of storage. I have another two docs in the works for networking and clustering. All targeting small scale setups.
ANY disk can fail at any time, even enterprise grade. It could be your SSDs were living in a heat hostile environment. It could also be another 1000 reasons. My point is that ZFS is better than EXT4 even in RAID-Z0, for a variety of reasons. The fact that a single disk can fail is no reason to...
A person who understands their craft will not look at my tutorials, as they are not meant for that person. I have no intention replicating the fantastic Proxmox manual.
Fair comment and no offence taken. ZFS on consumer SSDs should not be an issue as the disk will not be hammered as an enterprise one. I have done a lot of testing the last 3 years on the most basic NVMe SSDs, even on eMMC and ZFS has not failed once on any RAID-Z version (no ECC RAM was used and...
A follow up on my earlier post. To clarify, I am not trying to replace Proxmox documentation; I am trying to complement it and point to official resources people can explore on the spot while installing, something missing from reference/manual-style documentation because its intended purpose is...
The motivation for this kind of guide it to get people up and running as fast and accurately as possible using visual aid. The official documentation is fantastic, but will not get you anywhere fast. Most people will either not read or will most likely not understand on first pass of the manual...
I have created this post with the hope it can assist newcomers, and not only, with decision making. This post uses acronyms and is a preamble to a full set of articles which are best viewed on my portal, as I provide full online glossary, links, graphics and easy to follow instructions. In any...
After a long time struggling with the issue of randomly Proxmox becoming unresponsive and only a hard reset would resurrect it, it has been just short of a month with no crashes. About two months ago I updated to kernel 6.x, which helped but did not solve the issue.
I then deleted the following...
In attempting to setup SSH certificate authentication I have run into this issue on any host I have tried to setup for SSH cert authentication, running Debian 11 LXC unprivileged. I have checked the backports but no updates for openssh anywhere. Everything is up to date on the Proxmox VE and LXC...
For anyone looking at this thread, trying to resolve the same problem, I provide a summary below:
The issue not being able to update the kernel is related to having installed kdump-tools while using ZFS as the filesystem.
Check this link describing the bug...
It seems having PVE Kernel - Linux 5.15.74-1-pve - fixed the issues. I used to experience frequent crashes on AMD 4900H platform and now since end of Nov 2022 no more crashes.
This also solved my issue. However would appreciate a person with know-how to explain why binutils is the solution.
My problem started following an update of Proxmox to latest version. But why we need binutils is not very clear to me and would appreciate someone in the know to explain why it is...
A fellow member has pointed me to this discussion. I am not certain if any of you have resolved the issue. I would like to add my experience as it is based on AMD 4900H and 5900HX APUs. I do get a random freeze of Proxmox with a blank green screen.
The problem manifests whenever is activate a...
when I get the green screen the system is completely unresponsive either locally or remotely; not sure if you mean something else I do not understand though.
