Proxmox newbie

I am trying to learn proxmox. I installed it today 10.0.0.2. I can ping it. I installed ubuntu server 10.0.0.3. I can ping it. Installed a service that listens on port 8384. Ubuntu shows the service as active and listening. Firewalls appear off on both Proxmox and server.
I cannot ping 10.0.0.3:8384 at all.
added 10.0.0.3 syncthing to /etc/hosts on proxmox as others have suggested. Nothing. I am at a loss as to how proxmox works on this?

Any help would be appreciated.

You cannot ping a port number using icmp.
You need to use Telnet or Netcat commands to verify an open port.
