Hello,
I have a weird problem..after running updates and getting to reboot my server last week I haven't been able to install windows 2008 in VMs. When I boot them for the first time (off an ISO on a NFS share) they get to the "Windows is loading files..." screen, and never goes past it.

If I disable KVM it gets past the "Windows is loading files..." screen but then locks-up right after.

FOUNDRY:~# pveversion -v
pve-manager: 1.7-10 (pve-manager/1.7/5323)
running kernel: 2.6.32-4-pve
proxmox-ve-2.6.24: 1.6-26
pve-kernel-2.6.32-4-pve: 2.6.32-28
pve-kernel-2.6.24-10-pve: 2.6.24-21
pve-kernel-2.6.18-2-pve: 2.6.18-5
pve-kernel-2.6.24-12-pve: 2.6.24-25
qemu-server: 1.1-25
pve-firmware: 1.0-9
libpve-storage-perl: 1.0-16
vncterm: 0.9-2
vzctl: 3.0.24-1pve4
vzdump: 1.2-9
vzprocps: 2.0.11-1dso2
vzquota: 3.0.11-1
pve-qemu-kvm: 0.13.0-2

I noticed the "proxmox-ve" doesn't match the kernel, don't know if that matters.

Any ideas?
Thanks in advance!

pls run the following to get the right package:

Code:
aptitude install proxmox-ve-2.6.32

to your install issue:

win2008 should work without any problems - pls post your VM settings.
see /etc/qemu-server/VMID.conf.

Thanks for the quick reply!

Win2k8 has worked flawlessly in the past, I have 3 2k8 VMs on the server right now. That's why I'm so surprised its not working. :(

VM settings are:
name: Test
ide2: Phantom-ISO:iso/Windows2008Server.iso,media=cdrom
vlan0: rtl8139=1E:4E:9B:96:FC:38
ostype: w2k8
memory: 1024
sockets: 1
boot: da
freeze: 0
cpuunits: 1000
acpi: 1
kvm: 1

I will install that package when I get to work, hopefully I can reboot the server soon.

settings look fine and we got no issues with the new version. is your ISO image ok?

I was wrong. win2008 is not continuing also here. win2008r2 does work. I do more testing.

looks like the issue is only during installation and affects only win2008 and probably vista. winxp/win2003, win2008r2 and win7 does not show this behavior.

fast workaround, downgrade the kvm userspace tools for running the installer, then upgrade again to the latest (no reboot from the Proxmox VE host needed):

Code:
wget http://download.proxmox.com/debian/dists/lenny/pve1.6/binary-amd64/pve-qemu-kvm_0.12.5-2_amd64.deb
Code:
dpkg -i pve-qemu-kvm_0.12.5-2_amd64.deb
now install the win2008. poweroff the windows 2008 and install the latest version of KVM again with

Code:
aptitude safe-upgrade
does this work for you?

update: workaround works here.

Hello, sorry for the late reply.

Haven t had much time to work on this, I tried what you posted but w2k8 still fails to install (now it just shuts down instead of freezing) however I didn't get a chance to run "aptitude install proxmox-ve-2.6.32" yet. I will try to do this tonight.

Thanks!

**EDIT**
Just ran the aptitude for the heck of it, and re-downloaded the kvm package, server 2008 apears to be installing!! I will post back with results when/if it completes.

**EDIT2**

win2k8 installed flawlessly wit pve-qemu-kvm_0.12.5-2_amd64.deb THANKS!!

Thanks!

Hi, i was having same kind of problem with qemu 0.13 and win2003, when i want to install directly to virtio disk or boot on existing virtio disk.

what's is working is to do install with

-order d
-virtio-drive boot=on. (with a blank diskimage,no bootable).

if you configure boot order in proxmox web interface, for installation, put virtio disk boot first (with a non bootable blank disk), then cdrom second.

when i tried to make cdrom first and virtio second, it was installing when crashing at restart because disk order change.

i'll try with win2008R2 this week, i'll keep you in touch

Hello,

After doing an upgrade from 1.6 to 1.7 I had the same problem. No more possible to install Windows 2008. I also couldn't boot already installed Windows 2008.

The workaround worked for me. Is this a bug of proxmox ? Will it also happen if I install a fresh 1.7 from ISO ?

I tested it right now with a fresh install of proxmox 1.7 and I got the same behavior. I have to dowgrade to be able to install Windows.

Regards.

win2003 and also win2008r2 works here without issues (existing ones and new installations).

there is no 2008R1, its called win 2008. and yes, this one have the issue and you need the workaround if you do a fresh installation.

I just upgraded one of my proxmox 1.6 to 1.7 and Windows 2008 "classic" won't install (Black Screen after loading files)
Windows 2008 R2 install working...

known issue for old win2008 iso images/cd´s. use the latest version of the windows 2008 install iso (with sp2).
