Proxmox 2.6.32 incompatible with new Intel LAN

We are playing with the latest Intel I340 Quad Port LAN card:
http://www.intel.com/Products/Server/Adapters/esa-i340/esa-i340-overview.htm
It is the first quad port to have PCIe Gen. 2.0 ... so very cool!

However, it is WORKING with:
* Ubuntu 2.6.32-24 (10.04)
* igb driver 2.1.0-k2

But it is NOT working with:
* Proxmox 2.6.32-4 (1.6)
* Proxmox 2.6.32-5 (pvetest)
* igb driver 2.1.0 (from Ubuntu)
* igb driver 2.2.9 (from Proxmox)
* igb driver 2.4.8 (from Intel site)

Proxmox detects and shows all the correct signs of having the right igb driver for the I340 but it just does not work in operation. There are "link" signals when the machine is first turned on, but once the igb driver is loaded the "link" is gone.

We tried this Intel I340 card on both Supermicro and Intel machines, both sets of hardware give the same result - Ubuntu 2.6.32 works and Proxmox 2.6.32 does not.

Is there something else we can try to help troubleshoot this piece of new Intel hardware on Proxmox ?

my test box (using the latest 2.6.32 from pvetest) shows:

Code:
modinfo igb
filename:       /lib/modules/2.6.32-4-pve/kernel/drivers/net/igb/igb.ko
version:        2.3.4

did you tested this?

I just see the release notes of igb_2.4.8:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/e1000/files/igb stable/2.4.8/

Code:
*add support for new fiber devices Intel(R) Gigabit Server Adapters I340-F4
*add support for new string format of PBA numbers for adapters.
*fix for dropped connection when setting fiber devices to unsupported speed using ethtool.
*updated readme

seems that this is the reason why it is not working with 2.3.4

great! how did you test this?

We tried the I340 on different 64-bit distributions and machines:

1. CentOS 5 - works immediately
2. Ubuntu 10.04 - works immediately
3. Debian Squeeze - needs update to igb_2.4.8
4. Proxmox 1.6 - needs update to igb_2.4.8

So looks like igb_2.3.4 was the problem for us.

did you try Proxmox VE with 2.6.18?

No, I have only been playing with Proxmox 2.6.32.

They have moved the I340 out to another box, so I do not have a chance to try it on Proxmox 2.6.18 at this stage.

Not quite sure what igb is on Proxmox 2.6.18, but if it is not igb_2.3.4, then it might work.
