Will a VMware appliance be released?
Is there a reason to stay away from using VMware in this version (2.2)?

The VMware appliance 2.1 is certified from VMware. (Kernel, included vmware-tools etc.).

So just use the 2.1 and upload the servicepack 2.2. please note, a servicepack upload never changes the Kernel so you still run a certified version.

Currently there is no plan to release or certify a 2.6.24 Kernel based Virtual appliance for VMware.

But you can also install from ISO 2.2 on VMware or XEN or Virtualbox or Parallels or whatever full visualization solution you prefer.

The recommended way: Use the certified 2.1 and apply the servicepack 2.2.
