Well qm list hangs on listing VMs not much to say as I am going to be rebooting the server to fix it. On another note, a VM crashed at about the same time (I think, it was 2 AM).

It looks like I had a lock because of backups (my backup took too long so my daily backups were clashing). Is there any way to increase the speed of the backup.

where and how do you backup your VMs?

I back them up to an external HD via esata.

00 02 * * 2,4,6 root vzdump --quiet --bwlimit 1025024 --snapshot --compress --storage backup 101 103 104 105 108

I just added the bwlimit after I fixed everything.

It also used to be daily

what speed do you get? (see the backup log, e.g. sent via email)

and provide detailed info about your hardware, raid controller setup, disks, results of pveperf and pveversion -v.

I haven't gotten the email in a while so I do not know the speed. but here is the other data.

CPU BOGOMIPS: 42946.94
REGEX/SECOND: 1025785
HD SIZE: 94.49 GB (/dev/mapper/pve-root)
BUFFERED READS: 113.22 MB/sec
AVERAGE SEEK TIME: 10.34 ms
FSYNCS/SECOND: 2075.27
DNS EXT: 67.29 ms
DNS INT: 84.24 ms (mthode.org)

pve-manager: 1.5-8 (pve-manager/1.5/4674)
running kernel: 2.6.32-1-pve
proxmox-ve-2.6.32: 1.5-4
pve-kernel-2.6.32-1-pve: 2.6.32-4
pve-kernel-2.6.18-2-pve: 2.6.18-5
pve-kernel-2.6.24-5-pve: 2.6.24-6
pve-kernel-2.6.18-1-pve: 2.6.18-4
qemu-server: 1.1-11
pve-firmware: 1.0-3
libpve-storage-perl: 1.0-10
vncterm: 0.9-2
vzctl: 3.0.23-1pve8
vzdump: 1.2-5
vzprocps: 2.0.11-1dso2
vzquota: 3.0.11-1
pve-qemu-kvm: 0.11.1-2
ksm-control-daemon: 1.0-3

That might not mean much because all that is running on that raid array is PVE (no backups or VMs)
I have a 8 disk sata array and get 4-500MBps native.

can I increase the speed of the virtio nics to gigabit?
