Hi all, new here.

My question is to ask if anyone can help me understand (or point me to the correct docs/resources) on how to spec vms correctly and with the recommended config in terms of CPU and hard drive. What to use when and why?? ie: virtio/raw, 1 socket/2 cores,

I understand this varies per hardware, vm setup and individual usage. Just trying to make a start and better understand

For now I am looking to set up 2x MS 2K8, 2x Ubuntu server, 2x windows 7

My server is e3 1220, 32gb, 2tb raid 10

Thanks in advance for any info

thanks Tom, much appreciated.

I have realized after installing PVE 2.2 on my raid 10 @ 2TB (4TB raw) that it has used all the drive up ie containers and kvm can only be stored in a directory.

Am I right in thinking I should redo the raid array and create this:

raid 10, two separate partitions. 1. @ 60gb (for install) and 2. @ 1940gb (the rest for mounting as an lvm)

No, this is my own box. Just for learning/testing with. Hoping to use proxmox in my school where I work as a technician. First instance I would want to virtualize my Ubuntu FOG server.
After some further reading it appears I should use the qcow2 hds as they support live backups. Is there not any information in the wiki that explains what's what in terms of the different config options.

Maybe I'm being a but dumb and missing it. But can't seem to find anything. Think I will check the kvm homepage

KVM Live backup works for all storage types. If you start learning, I suggest you start immediately with 2.3 (currently in pvetest).

Don´t mix KVM Live snapshots with Live backup.

Read:

If you want to virtualize Ubuntu, just use qcow2 - if you want live snapshots - and virtio for disk and net. see out tutorial on http://www.youtube.com/proxmoxve
